Jim on Black in Business asked “What are we known for?” For me, it seems that we’re just known for our athletic ability. In a follow up post, he suggested that “being great” should be our business niche. I think this is a worthwhile goal to have in general, but it doesn’t really help us begin to achieve wealth as a whole. As I’ve said before, the main thing holding us back is the unwillingness to work together. Once we get past that, we can all achieve so much more than what we have now.

The Black “business niche” has become an interesting idea to me. Last week, I met up with some young black professionals and we were talking about how we all need to come together. In our region, there is no reason that with our resources, we can’t have a Sweet Auburn here. But I think I have a business niche for Blacks, commercial real estate. The article about Indian-Americans controlling 43% of the hotel industry is what got me thinking about the commercial market.

Think about it, a lot of black businesses own their own barbershops, hair salons, restaurants, doctor/dentist offices, etc. These are all commercial properties. To get started, if you already own your building, you just need to start another company and transfer ownership of the building to that company. At that point, you can pay rent to your new company. In the future, this could be useful if you decided to sell your business, but still receive rent payments through your commercial real estate company.

Now, imagine if the barbershop and hair salon owners got together and bought a larger building and used a third company to own the building that they both paid rent to. You could take this income and buy other buildings. Sell those, and buy larger buildings. Eventually, you could own some of the largest commercial properties in your city or region. This would work with doctors, dentists, professional services and other businesses.

This is just an idea, and I’m sure its a tad bit more complicated than what I described. However, this is what the Indian-Americans did with the hotel industry. They started with the corner hotel that had twenty rooms and traded up. They then brought in family and friends and pooled more money and bought larger properties. Forty years later, they own 43% of the market. If they could do it, why can’t we? Why can’t we own 35% of the entire commercial real estate market? They aren’t making any more land, and real estate is an appreciating asset. All it takes is us coming together and combining our resources. This is a plan I will be seriously looking into within the next two years. Wanna join me?

I’m starting to see a lot more articles like this:

More than a quarter million black and Hispanic families are expected to lose their homes in the next few years due toforeclosure. For many, the financial trouble will be traceable to a mortgage they should never have been given. MarketWatch

I talked about people living beyond their means in an earlier post. It seems that this sub prime lending issue is a lot bigger than I thought. To put 250,000 families in perspective, that’s more than the entire population of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Home ownership is a key ingredient to wealth. Buying a home that you can’t afford really throws a kink into achieving said wealth. From what I’ve been reading, a lot of these people have gone through mortgage brokers to get a home loan. Now, I’m not saying that mortgage brokers are shady, but I am saying that they aren’t the only people that offer a mortgage. In my experience, mortgage brokers have higher fees and higher interest rates. They offer the lower rate to bring in the customer and then slap on the fees and fine print that makes the loan a disaster waiting to happen.

People that do not know more than how to spell “mortgage” should not be getting an adjustable rate mortgage. It’s a financial tool that should be used by people with at least basic financial knowledge. When I hear about people that didn’t know that their mortgage could go up 30% in three years, I know that they had absolutely no idea of what they were getting into.

Unfortunately, it seems that these loans were the only way minorities could see themselves achieving homeownership. The sad thing is, if they got just a little education about buying a home and how mortgages worked, they could have saved themselves a lot of heartache. It doesn’t help that minorities are targeted for these “good deals.” Like momma said, “If it sounds too good to be true…” Also, if a sub prime lender is the only one that will give you a loan, then you really shouldn’t be getting the loan.

Personally, I used to have an adjustable rate mortgage, so I understand their appeal. The difference is, I did my research and switched back to a fixed mortgage once the rates had dropped back to the level I was waiting for. Also, my home had enough equity to where I could get a loan for up to 80% and still live comfortably. My parents gave me this rule when buying a home or car:

A home should cost no more that three times your salary
A car should cost no more than twice your salary

In practice, I haven’t gone close to that high on either. If only those 250,000 families had spoken to my parents first…

While we were in Atlanta, we visited the King Center. Talk about a powerful experience. Seeing the grave site, clothes and mementos that he owned just made it more real. It’s one thing to read about Dr. King; it’s quite another to see just how “real” he was. I recommend that visiting the memorial site should be on the agenda for anyone going to Atlanta. Hearing his voice in Ebenezer Baptist is very heart-stirring. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to tour all of the Non-violence display. What we saw, however, was enough to get our blood boiling. That display made me appreciate the sacrifices that were made for me to be where I am today. It also made me resolve to get off my tail and strive for the goals I’ve set for myself.

Our guide told us that Auburn Avenue (Sweet Auburn), where the church and memorial are located, was once the epicenter for affluent blacks. Now, the wealthy blacks have moved to the suburbs. I think this is very important in that the black community’s wealth is no longer centralized. This seems to have happened in most of the major cities. I’m not sure what we can do to regain the closeness and vitality of our communities. But wouldn’t it be nice if we had a lot of “Sweet Auburn’s” across the nation?

Yesterday, while driving home from work, I made a right turn and merged into oncoming traffic. All of a sudden, the car beside me flips on the lights and hits the siren. The policeman sped off. I assume he either thought I was about to hit him or he just wanted to mess with me. This incident brought back memories of two previous incidents involving our local law enforcement.

Incident One:

I usually take a back road home that goes by our local airport. On the route home, at a particular intersection, there is a Stop sign if you’re turning left, and a Yield sign if you’re turning right. I was making a right turn and slowed down just enough to safely make the turn. Because this was at night, I didn’t need to stop because I could see that there were no cars coming. This happened as a policeman was coming up to the intersection from the right. After I made the turn (without stopping), he made a U-turn and began to chase me down. I saw him coming so I proceeded to slow down and then he turned on his lights.

Once he got to my vehicle, and received my license and registration, he asked why I didn’t stop at the intersection. I responded that there was a Yield sign and there was no oncoming traffic. He said that wasn’t a valid excuse. I was supposed to stop. So I asked “when does yield mean stop? I don’t have to stop at a yield sign.” We went back and forth over this for a minute or so. Finally, he told me to drive safely and that I could leave.

Incident Two:

A few weeks ago, while going to work, I took a side street to avoid traffic. When I got to the stop sign, there was a policeman there. After he pulled off, I pulled up to the sign, stopped, and then pulled off. The policeman was going about 25 in a 45 zone, so I switched lanes and passed him. About half-a-mile later, he pulled up beside me at a red light. Once the light turned green, I pulled off and he switched lanes to get behind me and turned on his lights.

After he looked over my license and registration, he asked why I didn’t stop at the stop sign. I told him, “Sir, I thought I did stop at the sign.” He responded that I didn’t and then went on a tirade about obeying traffic signs and how it only takes three seconds for oncoming traffic to get up on you. He then asked if my loved ones would be grief-stricken if something happened to me. I answered “of course.” He then told me to make sure I pay attention and keep that in mind. Once again, I was let go with just a “warning”.

Let me make sure I understand this. Having a “medical condition” can get you released early from jail? What kind of bull**** is that? I think we all know that celebrities are, for the most part, treated very favorably when it comes to our “justice” system. And I’m sure people will say, “Hey, Kobe and OJ got off.” But they weren’t convicted of any crime. And they sure as hell didn’t get out of jail early because they weren’t feeling good.

I wonder how much Sheriff Lee Baca was paid by the Hilton family to facilitate this fiasco. Someone might wanna check his bank accounts and those of his family. Or maybe there was a trust set up for him. I’m sure he didn’t do this out of the kindness of his heart. Because he sure ain’t feeling the love for the poor people that have legitimate medical conditions and are still locked up in LA County’s jail system.

The interesting thing is, Baca is regarded as a very good elected official. So maybe this boils down to getting his agenda for the greater good being helped along by looking the other way. If that’s the case, its really sad that it takes the release of a spoiled, rich heiress to get programs passed and funded that help make LA County a better place for everyone. Me, I would have put them in jail for an attempted bribe.

Why is it that immigrants have figured out the path to wealth in this country but we haven’t? USA Today had an article about Indian-Americans controlling 43% of the 47,000 hotels and motels in the country. See that….43%…over 20,000 hotels and motels. And Indian-Americans aren’t the largest minority in this country, but yet they control almost half of an entire industry. Latin-Americans seem to be making headway in the home improvement industry. Black Americans? We just want to get a high paying job or play sports. However, as we move up the company ladder and hit the proverbial glass ceiling, we’re moving out to do our own thing.

Minorities are starting their own business at a faster and faster rate. I see this as a very good sign. Let’s face it, corporate American is still White America. We can’t escape racism, but we can step around it. Immigrants have figured that out and they won’t play the corporate game. They come here and start their own businesses. Black America needs to do the same. We might as well give up the hope of ever getting that 40 acres and a mule. Heck, the only thing the government is going to give us is a tax refund and welfare.

Back to the article, as I read it, a few things struck me. Indian-Americans control over 20,000 hotels. That means, they operate a business that they can literally live in. Also, buying a hotel means that they are also purchasing real estate. Have you noticed that hotels control some of the most desired real estate in the country? So that means that they have profit generating assets that appreciate over time. I wonder what the combined value of 20,000 hotels plus the land is? Almost sounds like they bought 40 acres and a mule huh. And Indian-Americans have accomplished this in less that 40 years.

Me thinks we have some work to do. Lets face it, whining about how unfair the world is not going to get us where we want to go. Blacks need to come together and help ourselves. Indian-Americans helped each other and that’s how they now control 43% of the hotel industry. The Latino community helps each other and they become stronger. The Black community pulls itself down. We’ve got to start taking responsibility for our own community. Nobody “wants” to live in the ghetto. We all want the nice house in the nice neighborhood.

Together, we can all find success. Its very hard if I just get my own and let the rest struggle. If I help the next man, we can grow together. We’ve got to get out of this selfish attitude that we have. This is why, on the Tom Joyner show, Tavis Smiley said he wasn’t concerned about Don Imus. He’s stopped trying to fix the “other” people. He’s just concentrating on getting “us” straight. Steve Harvey felt the same way. We have to uplift ourselves, because it’ll be a cold day in h*** before someone else does.

Last week, I got the opportunity to participate in a local elementary school’s Career Day. Since this school was in a predominately black neighborhood, I jumped at the chance. Being a young, black and professional male, I figured I’d show these kids that there are some of “them” being successful in life.

I was pretty nervous about going, however. I wasn’t sure how I could keep a class of 1st, 2nd and 4th graders interested for three 30 minute sessions. Once I got started though, the time flew by. And let me tell you, 4th graders can ask some very intelligent and world aware questions. I don’t remember being that worldly (or big) at that age.

All in all, it was fun a experience and I can hardly wait to participate next year. The only thing I regretted was not giving a good answer to one question. I was asked, “what type of family life did I have growing up?” Now, my childhood was very “Cosby-esque”. I had a very good childhood with wonderful parents. I’m sure most of these kids couldn’t say the same and I regret stressing that regardless of their home life, they could still be successful in life. In fact, adversity or a hard life can bring out the genius in some people. Next year, I’ll stress that.

A couple of weeks ago, Bank of America announced that they were going to offer credit cards to people that didn’t have a Social Security number and credit history. Interesting enough, they expanded this program from five branches to fifty-one branches in Los Angeles County. This area just happens to have the largest concentration of illegal immigrants in the United States. In a classic response, some customers closed their accounts in protest because of illegal aliens (read [insert negative adjective here] Mexicans) being able to obtain said credit card.

I’m not exactly sure why people care if illegal immigrants obtain a credit card. Well, other than some racist reason anyways. I don’t see how this is a bad thing. B of A shareholders should be estactic. Just think of all the fee income that will be generated. Actually, most people with a 401K should be happy. B of A’s income goes up, which means their stock goes up, which means peoples’ 401K goes up. Oh, and to get the credit card, the customer has to have a checking account. Since these account holders have to go through the Patriot Act scrutiny, I really don’t see the problem. Plus, you know B of A is going to charge a crazy interest rate.

So I say again, what exactly is so bad about this? All I can see is the positive effect that this will have on our economy. I’ve heard the arguments about Mexicans taking our jobs. Honestly though, I just think White America is worried about becoming the minority. The Hispanic and Black populations are growing at a much faster rate. The interesting thing is, Hispanics tend to take the jobs that no one wants, especially in construction. How long do you think it will be before Hispanics pretty much control the construction industry? Hispanics also start businesses at a higher rate. Blacks need to start paying attention. Instead of trying to be accepted in White America, Hispanics are building a country inside the US. Notice how everything is starting to have a Spanish translation on it? Now that’s power. And that’s really what it boils down to, loss of power.

On the Black In Business blog, Jim posted about personal weaknesses and improving them. I made a comment about how one of Jim’s weaknesses (poor spelling) could be interpreted as making blacks in general look like poor spellers. His response was very profound:

Every thing we do as black people reflect upon the whole race. If a white man cannot spell, he may be excused or just be a dumb white man, for us we carry the burden of representing the whole race. Until we are allowed to be one aspect of a diverse race of people, we risk never taking risk for fear of making all black people look bad.

Now in my defense, my comment was from the point of view that his misspellings would be interpreted as ignorance, which in turn would unfairly reflect on blacks in general. I correctly determined that he wasn’t very proficient with using a computer. Still, I’m embarrassed that I too fell into stereotyping.

Jim’s response made me think about how I also often bear the torch for my race. There have been plenty of instances in my life where I’ve been the first or only black to accomplish something. Whether it was the first to receive the Eagle Scout award, or being the only black at a technology company, I felt that I was representing my whole race. Even today, I feel that I have to be successful so that I can open doors for other blacks. Chris Rock said it best in “Head of State” when his aide said he shouldn’t quit in his campaign for the presidency:

“I wish I could quit. I wish it was that easy. You’re lucky, you are so lucky. You don’t know how good you got it. You just represent yourself. Me, I represent my whole race. If I quit, there won’t be another black candidate for 50 years.”

I’m willing to bet that most successful blacks feel that way deep down, that they have to succeed for our race, not just themselves. No other race gets this level of scrutiny. No other race has this level of pressure placed on each individual of that race. The Asian and Middle Eastern cultures probably come the closest, in that family honor is important. But like my wife said, “it takes a special person to be black. Most people don’t have the inner strength to live out what we go through in our lifetime.”

Well, it’s that time of year where your love is measured in gifts, cards and flowers. Honestly though, I rather enjoy Valentine’s Day. I guess it helps that I’m married to someone that reciprocates my love. It certainly makes it easier and a lot more fun to find that one card that’s just right. However, when I was younger, I really disliked Valentine’s Day. From what I could see, it was just a holiday for females. They were the ones that got all the gifts while us guys had to scrounge up money to pay for said gifts. That’s probably why a lot of breakups happen in October and November. Gotta avoid “gift-giving season”. A prior relationship that I had was the main reason I was turned off on celebrating “V-Day”.

While in college, I dated this female for about a year and a half. We met while we were both at same college and then each transferred to different schools. Her school was close to my hometown and I would visit her and my parents every other weekend. Well, being a college student with no job, funds were pretty tight. When Valentine’s Day rolled around, I didn’t really have any spare money to get a nice gift. My girlfriend picked me up that weekend and brought me home. She let me borrow her car to drive back and forth between her and my parent’s place. That Sunday was Valentine’s Day. While on the way to pick up her up so that she could take me back to school, I stopped and picked up a nice card. When I got to her dorm, I left the card on the passenger seat and went up to her room.

Once I got there, she reached out her hands and said, “where’s my gift?” I told her that I hadn’t gotten her anything and she proceeded to go off on me. I remember something about “not caring about her” and “being too cheap to even get a card.” By this time I was pretty annoyed and ended the conversation by suggesting we leave so she could take me back to school. When she got in the car, she saw the card and looked at me and apologized. Needless to say, that was a pretty quiet two hour drive back to school. After she dropped me off, we kissed each other good-bye and she apologized again. She hopped back in her car and left while I settled into my dorm room. I thought about everything that happened and then it hit me, “that triflin’ chick didn’t even get ME anything. And she cusses ME out?!?!?”

Sad to say, but we weren’t together a few months later. I did learn a lot from that relationship though. That’s why it’s so nice to finally be with someone that appreciates and cherishes you as much as you do them. So to my wife…Happy Valentine’s Day baby.

Even Steve Jobs thinks DRM sucks. I must say, I almost feel vindicated. Total vindication will happen when music companies totally do away with this DRM nonsense. Believe me, I understand the arguments for it. I just feel that in the long run, its futile. I’m firmly in the camp that believes that if I already paid for the digital media, I shouldn’t have to pay again just to have it in another format. Music companies didn’t have a problem when we made copies with tapes. They only began to care when copies were able to be distributed to millions at a time for free.

One interesting point I’d like to make is, the rise in illegal downloads coincides with the decline in music singles. Right around the time Napster hit the scene, I found it hard to find singles to music I wanted to buy. Those I did find, cost almost as much as the whole album. And record execs wonder why their sales started slipping. Some how, they forgot about the whole “demand” thingy in “supply and demand”. Hopefully Apple will help the music companies see the light. Then I won’t have to register every single computer I use my iPod on.

In today’s paper, there was a story about a round table meeting with technology leaders in the area. The story was basically about helping the area grow into a technology hub and the problems associated with achieving that goal. This area is considered one of the top places to live and start a business is the U.S. However, the state’s education system isn’t exactly in the top 10 in the country.

These panelists touched on the school systems in the state being a problem of getting talented technology workers to move here. They also cited a lack of tax incentives and other exemptions that other industries receive for moving here. One CEO in particular talked about not being able to hire all the talent they needed from a local school, which just happens to be one of the largest in the state. His company needed to go outside the state to bring in talent. This same company ran advertisements in a Midwest state to recruit employees.

What’s interesting about all of this is, there are at least ten schools of higher education here. I’ll also assume that this company does recruit at the larger schools in the state. But I’m willing to bet that they don’t recruit at a single HBCU in this state or any other state. I think that’s part of the reason technology companies are having a problem with recruiting here. There are at least five HBCUs within ninety miles of here. I know there are some talented students graduating from there. I include myself in that number. Unfortunately, the good ol’ boy network is still alive and well. Supposedly, when it comes to technology workers, talent and knowledge are the main currencies. Not for Blacks. Maybe for Asians or East Indians.

These companies are missing out on talent that is right beneath their collective noses. I know this first hand because one of the companies mentioned in the article didn’t hire my wife. They’ll never know the special gifts that she could have brought to the company. In her case however, I don’t think race was a factor. Given her experience and high level of pay at her previous job, they most likely figured she’d want too high of a salary.

This brings me to what I think is the main reason these companies have a problem getting employees: they don’t want to pay for talent. People tend to move to this area because of the warm weather and laid back lifestyle. Being a beautiful and historical area certainly helps also. Companies try to sell the lifestyle, which means they can low-ball salary offers. I don’t know too many knowledge workers willing to go from 85K+ to 60K just to live in a vacation spot. Especially when there are other places to live that are just as nice and companies there will meet your salary demands.

As long as companies here continue to ignore minorities and refuse to raise their pay levels, they will keep having recruiting problems. Even at my current company, a VP told me I’d have to go work for another company to make the kind of money I wanted. I must admit, I was a little ticked off at first. It seemed that “the man” was just trying to hold me down. As I thought about it however, I decided he’s right; my goal is to take my talent and eventually make more than our CEO.

Well, it finally happened. Lovie Smith became the first black head coach to lead his team to the Super Bowl. Later this evening, Tony Dungy, another black head coach, joined him. Who would have thought…a Super Bowl where no matter what, a black head coach will win.

There is a struggle with getting more blacks in positions of power in sports. It seems to me that the NFL has made the most strides. Today, we witnessed another step in the right direction. Black coaches haven’t been given a fair shake in general, but the black coaches in the NFL have exceeded when compared with there white counterparts. So far, there have been seven black head coaches: Art Shell, Ray Rhodes, Dennis Green, Herman Edwards, Tony Dungy, Marvin Lewis and Lovie Smith. Every single one of these coaches has lead their teams to the playoffs. Here’s an except from another article:

…In fact, with the exception of Marvin Lewis, every black coach in NFL history to date has gotten his team to the playoffs within two seasons. Art Shell, Ray Rhodes, Dennis Green, Dungy, Herman Edwards, Lovie Smith all did it in their 1st or 2nd season with their first teams. Only Edwards can be said to have walked into a situation that was not marked “Total Disaster”.

Johnnie Cochran Jr. and Cyrus Mehri released a report in 2002 that caused the NFL to establish the Rooney Rule. The Rooney Rule required each team to interview at least one minority candidate when filling a head coach position or be fined.

This rule has had some effect. Even though its sad that such a rule is necessary to promote an equitable opportunity for minority coaches, I’m proud that those coaches that have been given a chance, have excelled. Now if we could just apply all this to the Fortune 500.

Today is the celebration of Dr. King’s life and work. There have been plenty of posts and articles posted today in remembrance of him. All this made me think about what effect Dr. King has had on my life.

Since I’m a 70’s child, I’ve grown up knowing nothing but “diversity” and “equal opportunity”. At least this is what my parents tried to provide for me. My sister on the other hand, is from a different generation. She’s old enough to actually remember seeing “White Only” signs and she went through integration in high school. As for me, I grew up being the only black in my honors classes, so I can somewhat relate to the seclusion my sister must have felt. But for the most part, to my knowledge, I never encountered racism while growing up. Actually, I was ostracized by the black students more than I was by white students. There was one other black male that started off in the honors classes, but he ended up dropping down to the “college prep” tract. Looking back, I think he was just tired of being picked on by the black kids in his neighborhood.

As for me, my education minded parents encouraged me to stay the course. Because of their influence, I achieved some “firsts” in my life. I was the first Eagle Scout in a mostly white Boy Scout troop. I was also the first Black Eagle Scout in my county. I’m sure this upset a lot of White parents of the boys in my troop. Especially a troop leader or two whose sons were older than me. Anyways, because of always being the only black in my classes, I went to a HBCU for college. My classmates were all shocked by this. Everyone figured I would go to a big White state university. My close friends, however, always knew I’d go to a HBCU. The surprise for them was the fact that I didn’t go to my parents’ alma mater.

I finally started to notice racist attitudes when I got to college. Because I was now hanging out with a “black crowd”, I began to notice how store clerks treated us. It was all good when I was with white friends. Now, I noticed people following us around and immediately “helping” us in the stores. This was a shock to me, but a valuable learning experience. When I went back home, I began to notice things there also.

One day, after I graduated from college, I talked to my mom about my experiences. She sat quietly and listened to me. When I finished, I asked her if I’d unknowingly gone through this when I was growing up. She looked up and told me that she and my dad tried to shield me from as much as they could. At that moment, I had a sudden thought. I asked her, “was all this prejudice the reason I was never in the “gifted” program until I got to high school?” She gave a sad smile and nodded.

Now, I never had high grades in school because I did just enough to get by. However, I always tested in the highest percentile. She told me that it just wasn’t worth the fight to get me in the “gifted” program when I was younger. Since she worked in education, she figured it was just extra work for no reason. Besides, I’d already had more experiences than 98% of the kids I ‘d gone to school with. Not too many black kids could say that they’d been to Europe, Canada, Mexico and all over the US by the age of eighteen unless they had a parent that was in the military. Heck, most white kids in my hometown hadn’t been off the east coast, much less out of the country. My mom said that once I got to the point where I could take high school level classes early, they fought for me. They wanted me to have the option to graduate early. Hearing that was pretty sobering.

Today, I’m out in corporate America. Once again, I’m the only Black in a lot of cases. Since I’m a black male in IT, I tend to stand out. There have been occasions when I’ve sat down with management and I know I’ve been told “no” about something specifically because I’m a black male. They might tell you “it’s lack of funds” or “it’s company policy” or some other reason, but other white co-workers don’t seem to have the same constraints. I’ve seen this happen with other black employees also. Oh, and the favorite excuse seems to be either “you don’t have enough education” or “you don’t have enough experience”. I’ve gotten the experience excuse myself.

All this tends to lead me to the conclusion that I am a token, a statistic that can be reported to the government. But that’s okay, I don’t mind. One day soon, I’ll really be able to use my knowledge and experience to help others come up. This is the reason I volunteer in my community. By constantly seeing a positive black male role model, kids will be inspired to be successful in whatever they want to do in life. Only by opening doors and helping others can we help achieve the dream Dr. King had for all of us. The question I have for you is, will you continue to just be a “token” or will you answer that knock at your door?

I ran across this article that talked about insurers using credit scores for premiums. Now, I vaguely remember my previous car insurer running a credit check on me when I got car insurance. However, it never really occurred to me that bad credit could raise my premiums.

Can you imagine getting that new Expedition and being denied insurance because of your credit score? As if a $500 car payment wasn’t bad enough, now you have to worry about higher premiums because of a lower credit score? Oh, and in case you haven’t heard, some electric companies are starting to report to credit bureaus also. Now I don’t know about you, but its not unusual for me to be late with a utility bill or two. It’s not that I don’t have the money in my account, I just forget to pay the bill. Better believe that I’m going stay on top of this now.

Personally, I think all of this is really hurting minorities. Historically, Blacks and Hispanics have lower credit scores. The fact that utility companies are starting to report your paying habits to credit bureaus will only make it worse. Today is definitely the day to start getting your finances in order. There is plenty of free information out there to help you get started. A couple of sites that I like are Black Enterprise and I Will Teach You To Be Rich. Also, check out your public library. In today’s world, reading and finances are fundamental.

To say that Fantasia’s new song “Hood Boy” annoys me is an understatement. Why do music artists insist on repeatedly making ignorant songs as this? Oh yeah, because ignorant people keep buying them. And this is just one of many songs singing the praises of “bad boys”. I swear, I don’t get it. So I asked one of my female friends about her attraction to bad boys. She said it was the excitement, the spontaneity of being with them. The whole “down for whatever”.

Now admittedly, I’m the proverbial “nice guy”. The one your parents love. The educated, intelligent, soft-spoken brother that most of you wouldn’t pay attention to if I were still single. But in my experience, the only exciting bad boys I’ve seen tend to have jail time or an early death in their future. And this is what some females want? There has got to be something mentally wrong with someone that wants a person that they know will mistreat, abuse, and/or disrespect them. Or maybe they naively believe they can change a bad boy. Now where is the logic in that? You want a bad boy so that you can change him into a nice guy? And finding out that your boyfriend, that served a little time, is on the DL must be priceless. Nothing like a little Thuggin’ Love.

I was reading my copy of “The Boondocks: Because I Know You Don’t Read the Newspaper” and noticed something surprising. In one strip, Huey was playing Granddad in a video game. By the dialog, I could tell they were playing video soccer. Wow. Now this comic strip is about two boys that move from the south side of Chicago to the suburbs of Woodcrest with their grandfather, and they’re playing a soccer video game. Just out of curiosity, how many black Americans do you know that have a copy of FIFA 2007 or Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007? Personally, I’m the only one I know about. All my black friends are busy playing Madden, NCAA Football, NBA Live or NBA 2K7. But soccer? Please.

So, the question is, why are two kids from the “ghetto” playing what is considered a “white” sport? Could it be because soccer is the number one sport in the world? Could Aaron McGruder be a soccer fan? I’m willing to bet that most people that read The Boondocks didn’t even pick up that these kids and their grandfather were playing video soccer. The irony went entirely over their heads.

I, on the other hand, happen to be a huge fan. I have a few kits (jerseys) from my favorite team (Chelsea), watch Fox Soccer Channel avidly, and play in an adult league. Heck, I’ve even scored a few goals, for my team and our opponents. But I digress. Black people in America don’t play soccer, at least not yet. As soon as they start paying everyone like Freddy Adu, we’ll pick it up just as quickly as we do basketball and football.

The reason I mention all of this, is because a female I was sort of dating a few years ago, basically told me I wasn’t black enough because I liked soccer. Needless to say, I was dumbfounded. I’m not black enough because I like soccer? Last I checked, soccer was the number one sport on the continent of Africa. And there are waaaaaaay more blacks there than in the US.

Her statement just shows the continued ignorance that we black Americans still show. Never mind that I went to two HBCUs. Never mind that I volunteer with black youths. Never mind that every day I wake up and look in the mirror, I see a black man. I’m not black enough because I have some interests that are mostly shared with white people in this country. And yes, I even sound “white” because I have a college education and speak all proper. Here’s a secret for you….most educated people speak proper. It has nothing to do with race.

It’s this attitude that is holding us back as a race. We’re too worried about our “blackness” and “keepin’ it real”. I mean, who needs the Klu Klux Klan when we do more harm to ourselves. Instead of being color-struck or jealous of what the next guy has, we need to start working together. There is more than enough for everyone. Who cares if Omar has more than I do. I’d much rather ask Omar how he got to where he is and could he be a mentor to help me get there to. But remember, at the end of the day, to a lot of people out there, no matter how successful we are, or how much money we have, or how great an athlete we are, we’re already “black enough” in their eyes. We’re all just another n*****.

My wife didn’t believe me until I showed her one when we were out one day. A Mercedes 100 series. That is total comedy to me. If you have a Mercedes 100 series or even a BMW 125, I have one question for you. Why? Is having a foreign luxury car so important to your broke behind that you’d buy the lowest model available, one that has to be special ordered? Let me let you in on a little secret. Those friends that “ooohhh” and “aaahhh” at your 100 series aren’t green with envy. They’re red from laughter.

All that 100 series says is, “I couldn’t afford the 200 or 300 series, so I had the dealer special order the cheapest one I could afford.” The funny thing is, I never thought someone would actually want a 100 series. But lo and behold, I overhead a co-worker brag about how she was going to get her a new 100 series Mercedes. This is the same co-worker that had to declare bankruptcy about 10 years ago. I guess playing “high post” is important to some people.

Today was a real beautiful day. So after visiting some of my family, my wife and I decided to go look at homes. Now I don’t know about you, but we like to drive around and look at homes in the nicer neighborhoods and dream about “one day”.

There is one neighborhood in particular that we like that is about a 15 minute drive from our house. These homes are in the 700K – 2 million range and they are niiiiiiiiiiiiiice. As we drove around, I noticed the kids playing and the nice cars. I also saw some of the parents. What struck me was, “hey, they’re around our age”, mid to late 30s. So now I’m wondering, what is it that they do for a living to be able to afford a house like that?

This area isn’t exactly known for a lot of high salaries, and since these were younger people, they couldn’t be retiring here could they? Now don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of doctors, lawyers, and other professionals in this region. But there are also a lot of high priced neighborhoods. The average wage in this region is around $30,000 while the average home is around $300,000. It kind of makes me wonder if they’re living way beyond their means. I know how much income our household brings in, and we’re just comfortable. Actually, if we had no credit card debt, we’d be sitting pretty. But I can’t fathom how someone can afford a $4000+ mortgage, credit card bills, car payments, and child raising.

I know most people in general aren’t well off financially, but maybe I’m missing something. Maybe all these people have their finances in order. Or maybe grandpa and grandma are paying for their grand-kids to go to private school and chipping in on living expenses. From what I hear from co-workers about their finances, I’m betting on the latter in a lot of cases.
